Why we started

Code4All started with a question we couldn't answer: why do so few students take the computer science classes their schools already offer? In New Jersey, 86% of high schools offer CS courses, but fewer than 9% of students enroll in them. We talked to people who work with kids in Trenton and heard the same thing. The classes exist and the school laptops exist, but almost nothing exists to make a twelve-year-old want to try coding in the first place. We built what was missing, a free coding club that incentivizes students to come and try out coding and is hosted inside organizations kids already trust. Every student who finishes the program keeps a computer of their own to continue coding, an incentive that keeps them coming back.
